AU and NZ Ecommerce Trends

Both Australian and New Zealand continue to see a consistent increase in ecommerce sales—both domestic and imports. Although these two neighboring countries have some similarities there are some differences that ecommerce sellers need to be aware of. Let’s start with some basic statistics, Australia is home to 24 million people with a total GDP of 1.2 trillion USD. Ranked as the 19th richest country, according to the World Bank GDP per capita rankings. 

Australia’s GDP per capita is currently 50,795 USD and expected to reach 57,913 USD by 2025. [1]  With significant numbers of its own, New Zealand is home to 4.69 million people with a total GDP of 184.97 billion USD and GDP per capita of 38,823 USD. [2]

Differences and Similarities

As an ecommerce seller in Australia and New Zealand, there are many opportunities to sell to Australian consumers and here’s why: with 12.2 million ecommerce users in Australia, with an additional 2.15 million users expected to be shopping online, these ecommerce shoppers will represent 59.79% of the total population.

Although significantly lower, there are currently 2 million ecommerce users in New Zealand, there is still a sizeable ecommerce market in New Zealand. And depending on the product you are selling you may have a market in both Australia and New Zealand.

According to Age

Internet usage according to age is important to know so you market according to age groups for both Aussies and Kiwis. It is no surprise that the younger consumers log on much more frequently than older shoppers. Both countries have very similar daily Internet data usage based on age groups:

16-24 years     97-99%            

25-34 years     95-97 %         

45-54 years      89%

55+years          81-89%

Products Being Purchased

Fashion is currently the leading product category in Australia, followed by electronics, which generates 2.5 billion USD in sales. By 2025, fashion will still be the most purchased online category, with a value of 5 billion USD, and second favorite, electronics, is expected to be worth 3.5 billion
